Maiko Tamm is aiming to get off to a flying start in the 2026 FIA European Rallycross Championship in Rīga next month, revealing that the experience of competing so close to home gives him ‘extra motivation’ to put on a spectacular show.
Tamm certainly shone in his only Euro RX1 appearance to-date, at Finland’s KymiRing last summer, when he dazzled the international rallycross community by triumphing on his debut, taking the chequered flag more than six seconds clear of his closest rival in the final.
“It was a big step-up and also a bit of an unknown going into that weekend,” the 22-year-old reflects. “Honestly, I could never have expected to win first time out. My main goal was to learn, gain experience and see where I really stood against international competition.
“The level was extremely high. In Euro RX, there are no easy races, and every heat requires maximum focus. That’s what made the result even more meaningful – I had to stay sharp from start-to-finish and minimise mistakes.

“My performance gave me a huge boost – it confirmed I’m on the right path and that I can compete at this level. After Finland, there was no doubt in my mind that I wanted to come back and do more racing in Euro RX to continue developing.”
Tamm will duly return to the start-line for the 2026 curtain-raising contest in the Latvian capital on 9-10 May, as part of a bumper 30-strong grid in the series’ headlining category – the largest entry for an opening round of the season in almost a decade.
Widely regarded as one of the most exciting up-and-coming prospects in Baltic motorsport – having clinched back-to-back Supercar class crowns on the domestic rallycross scene in 2022 and 2023 – the rising star lives barely two hours away from the Bikernieki circuit, just across the Estonian border in Tõrva. He hopes the ‘home’ support will help to spur him on to further success.

“Rīga is always special for me,” Tamm acknowledges. “It feels like a home event, and the atmosphere, the crowd and the familiarity give me extra motivation. I’m really looking forward to it, and the aim is to fight for strong results and put on a good show for the fans.
“Beyond that, the plan is to continue the season based upon available opportunities. I would really like to race in France as well, but the final structure will depend mainly on budget and logistical factors.
“Euro RX1 has a very large and competitive field this year, but that’s only a positive, since racing against top-tier drivers helps you to improve much faster. My focus is on consistency, learning and gaining as much experience as possible – every start and every lap is another step forward in my development.”
